This week Five Minute Friday’s word is “crave”…
CRAVE: “to ask for earnestly;” “to want greatly;” “to have a strong or inward desire.”
What do you want for Christmas?
It’s a question I get asked my family every year and now I also have to answer for Ezra!
We all have our lists.
Lists full of possessions reflecting our passions and personalities.
Lists full of adventures to tell stories for years to come.
Lists full of desires dominating our deepest thoughts.
For some, a peaceful meal with loved ones tops the list. For others, a long-awaited gift to treasure, perhaps healing, joy, a son or daughter returning home. Seeing your children excitedly play with the toy they have longed for can be gift enough for a parent.
But what is it we are to really crave at Christmas? Is it people and possessions and smiles from Santa or are we to simply crave Jesus?
I don’t believe there is anything wrong with gifts and goodies but they cannot dominate our craving minds. FIRST Jesus, then the rest. When we put craving Jesus at the top of our list, when we focus our hearts and minds on Him above all else, the rest of the list gets placed into perspective.
This has been a trying season for me in which I have craved many things besides Jesus. My love for Him and desire has not faded but I have allowed what I crave on this earth to create a shadow over my treasured time with Him. I have allowed my thoughts to fix too much on my earthly cravings instead of my eternal treasures.
This is our first Christmas as a family of three and my deepest desire for a gift to give our son is to recognize the reason for the season and for Him to grow up to crave Jesus at the top of his Christmas list! Of course, he will have a toy or ten wrapped under the tree!
